Born in Batavia, IL in 1962, Bruce Alan Johanns studied ceramic engineering at the University of Illinois from 1980-82 and subsequently embarked on a 12-year career in modelmaking. Apprenticing under three master modelmakers, Johanns acquired an in-depth knowledge of the flexibility, form, and strengths of various materials. He has worked on projects of all scales, from small and intricate prototypes for Corningware to enormous off-shore oil well caps. In his commercial work, Johanns engaged in all aspects of the design process, bringing objects from blueprint to completed physical form. A natural builder, Johanns later applied this skill to cabinet making, furniture design and commercial and residential interior construction. Since transitioning from a workspace in Greenpoint to his Gowanus studio in 2011, he has dedicated and focused his commitment to sculpted forms.
